Nay Pyi Taw, The Gulf Observer: Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Acting President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC), has called for prioritizing socioeconomic development, reducing inequality, and ensuring the upcoming general election is free, fair, and credible.

Addressing a work coordination meeting between the SSPC and the Union Government yesterday, the Senior General stressed the need to improve living standards, safeguard physical and mental well-being, and narrow the wealth gap across the country. He urged authorities to give special attention to rural development and employment generation.

Reflecting on his recent participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 Plus in China, the Senior General underlined the potential benefits of Myanmar’s engagement with the bloc, noting its combined GDP of over US$30 trillion and population of 3.9 billion. He also highlighted bilateral discussions with Chinese, Indian, and Lao leaders on trade, border reopening, and election support, including offers to send international election observers.

The Senior General emphasized Myanmar’s opportunities in trade and investment, particularly with China. He said Chinese business leaders had shown strong interest in investing in Myanmar using the yuan/kyat direct payment system, which could boost capital inflows, employment, and technology transfer. He further underscored the need to expand agricultural and livestock exports to strengthen Myanmar’s trade surplus, while promoting industries such as sunflower oil, bamboo, cotton, rubber, and coffee.

Turning to education, he highlighted the importance of developing skilled human resources for production industries, urging reliability and quality in schools and universities. He also called for vigilance over social media misuse, citing security risks and lessons from regional unrest.

On national security, the Senior General pointed to the need to combat drug production, curb online fraud, and tighten controls on illegal border trade. He urged regional and state authorities to strengthen cooperation in maintaining stability and supporting preparations for the December 28 general election.

Union ministers, Commission members, and regional officials presented reports on election security, administrative measures, and efforts to address illegal activities, including fake passports and misconduct among religious figures.

Also present at the meeting were Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Prime Minister U Nyo Saw, Executive Chief U Aung Lin Dwe, Union ministers, and state and regional chief ministers via videoconference.
