More than a Teacher: A Story from Oman

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The National Museum of Oman’s Learning Centre hosted the premiere of the documentary titled “More than a Teacher: A Story from Oman” on Sunday, showcasing the longstanding educational ties between Oman and the United States. The event, attended by Dr Madiha Ahmed al Shaibani, Minister of Education, and distinguished guests, marked a significant moment in Oman’s cultural and educational outreach.

Produced by Aisha Sahar Wahid al Kharousi, the documentary is a celebration of Oman’s rich history, vibrant present, and promising future, as illustrated through the remarkable journey of Don Yager. An American educator, Yager played a pivotal role in The Sultan’s School scholarship programme from 1980 to 2005, a period that reflects the visionary leadership of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Yager’s story serves as a poignant example of the deep-rooted educational and cultural relations between Oman and the United States, echoing the late Sultan Qaboos’s emphasis on education as a cornerstone of the nation’s renaissance.

Aisha Sahar Wahid al Kharousi, the documentary’s producer, stated, “This documentary not only commemorates Oman’s enduring friendship with the United States but also highlights the promising opportunities that lie within Oman’s renewed renaissance under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.”

Nayef bin Ali al Abri, Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority and a graduate of the scholarship, expressed, “The film narrates the story of a man deeply rooted in this land, showcasing Oman’s rich cultural and tourism heritage.”

Yager himself reflected on the documentary as a celebration of the strong bond he shares with his students, showcasing their significant achievements and contributions to development. “The film is a testament to the special bond that Americans residing in Oman have with this country, showcasing the modern renaissance of Oman and its achievements across various domains,” Yager added.

The documentary offers a cinematic journey through Oman’s scenic beauty, cultural richness, and historical depth, aiming to promote the sultanate’s touristic and cultural heritage globally. It stands as a collaborative effort by Omanis in production, direction, editing, and music, showcasing the nation’s creative prowess.

As part of a broader effort to highlight Oman’s unique story to a global audience, the documentary will be screened at The Sultan’s School and in the United States in collaboration with educational and cultural institutions. This initiative seeks to further strengthen cultural and educational exchanges between Oman and the United States.
