Morocco Records Surge in Sweet Corn Exports, Surpassing Spain in European Market

Sweet Corn

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco is experiencing a remarkable boom in agricultural exports, with sweet corn emerging as a leading product following favorable production and harvest seasons.

According to data from EastFruit and the Global Trade Tracker via Morocco’s Office des Changes, Moroccan sweet corn exports exceeded 21,800 tonnes between July and June. This reflects a 28 percent increase during the 2023/2024 market year, and a 61 percent rise compared with 2022/2023.

The exports generated approximately $20 million (MAD 200 million) for the North African nation, underscoring the sector’s growing contribution to the economy.

The achievement is particularly notable as Morocco has overtaken Spain to become one of the primary suppliers of sweet corn to the European market. Despite facing persistent drought and other climate-related challenges, Morocco has now established itself as the EU’s second-largest supplier of sweet corn.

Agricultural experts see the upward trend as an indicator of Morocco’s expanding potential in global agri-food markets, with sweet corn poised to join the country’s already significant exports of tomatoes, citrus fruits, and other produce.
