National Assembly Chairman Meets with Female Lawmakers Ahead of Vietnamese Women’s Day
Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: On Tuesday, National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn held a meeting with a group of full-time female lawmakers and high-ranking female officials from the National Assembly (NA) Office and the Institute of Legislative Studies in Hanoi, in anticipation of the 94th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Women’s Union and Vietnamese Women’s Day on October 20.
Chairman Mẫn emphasized that women, who make up nearly 50 million of Vietnam’s population—approximately 50.1 percent—have a significant role in the workforce, with a participation rate of 78.2 percent. He highlighted Vietnam’s global recognition for high female political participation, noting the historic election of 151 women as deputies in the 15th National Assembly and People’s Councils for the 2021-2026 tenure, representing 30.26 percent of the total—a record high since the 11th legislature.
In his address, Chairman Mẫn commended the notable contributions of NA agencies and the Office, particularly acknowledging the efforts of female lawmakers, senior officials, public servants, and staff. He stressed the critical role these women play in shaping the nation’s legislative agenda and urged their continued dedication and active involvement as the 15th NA’s 8th session approaches its opening on October 21.
Mẫn called upon the participants to build upon their successes and to proactively engage in NA activities. He emphasized the importance of their input in the consideration and approval of draft laws and resolutions, as well as the development of mechanisms and policies.
Nguyễn Thuý Anh, Chairwoman of the NA Committee for Social Affairs and the Vietnam Female Deputies Group of the 15th legislature, spoke about the group’s significant impact since its establishment in 2008. She noted that female deputies have maintained close connections with their constituents, effectively conveying public concerns and aspirations to the NA. Their roles encompass various activities, including law-building, oversight, decision-making on key national issues, as well as engagement in diplomacy, charity, welfare, and socio-cultural initiatives, which have received recognition both domestically and internationally.
She expressed her gratitude for the support from Chairman Mẫn and other leaders, which continues to inspire female deputies to elevate women’s voices. As they navigate the evolving demands of NA activities, these women serve as a vital link between the NA and the people they represent, reinforcing the importance of their contributions to Vietnam’s legislative process.
