National Assembly to Vote on New State President as Eighth Session Opens

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: The National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam is set to vote on the new State President on the first day of its eighth session, which begins Monday. This decision will be carried out in accordance with the Constitution and laws, as outlined in the personnel agenda for the upcoming meeting of the 15th-tenure assembly. The announcement was made during a press conference on Sunday.

The 10th session of the 13th Party Central Committee had previously reached a consensus on qualified candidates for the position of President for the 2021-2026 term, ensuring the smooth continuation of leadership.

The eighth session of the NA, which spans a total of 29.5 days, will be conducted in two phases: from October 21 to November 13, and from November 20 to 30. In addition to the election of the President, the assembly will review and vote on 15 laws, three legal resolutions, and provide comments on 13 additional law projects. Key socio-economic topics will also be addressed, including Vietnam’s recovery from Typhoon Yagi, the 2024 State budget, social housing development, and efforts to regulate the real estate market.

The assembly’s agenda further includes crime prevention, anti-corruption measures, voters’ recommendations, and the evaluation of major infrastructure projects. Notably, the establishment of Huế as a city under central authority and a national target programme for cultural development from 2025 to 2035 will also be discussed.

Given the importance of this session, Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm is expected to deliver an opening speech. Lâm, who was sworn in as President on May 22 for the 2021-2026 term, assumed the role of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam on August 3, following the passing of former Party leader Nguyễn Phú Trọng.

In preparation for the extensive legislative work ahead, the NA Standing Committee held several consultations with the Government. A total of 132 out of 154 official documents related to the session have been distributed to deputies for review. The session will also feature Q&A sessions with senior officials, fostering accountability and transparency in governance.

The agenda underscores the session’s significance in shaping Vietnam’s legal, social, and economic landscape for the coming years.
