Oman Calls for Establishment of Palestinian State to End Middle East Conflict

New York, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman has emphasized that resolving the conflict in the Middle East can only be achieved by establishing a Palestinian state and granting the State of Palestine full and undiminished membership in the United Nations.

This statement was delivered by First Secretary Mohammed bin Ali Al Shehhi, a member of Oman’s permanent delegation to the United Nations, during the UN General Assembly’s discussion of the “Security Council Report” in New York City.

Oman expressed regret over the Security Council’s failure to pass the resolution granting Palestine its legitimate right to UN membership. This failure, Oman noted, contradicts the international consensus on the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and hinders global efforts to establish justice and peace.

The Sultanate called on all Security Council members to give the Palestinian issue full and fair attention, applying equitable standards to all parties, respecting international law, and adhering to UN resolutions. This approach, Oman asserted, is crucial for ensuring security, stability, and peace in the region and worldwide.

Oman also supported calls from other nations for a review of the Security Council’s working mechanisms, particularly concerning the use of the veto. Oman advocated for responsible and lawful use of the veto, aligning with the United Nations’ goals of upholding international law and humanitarian principles, thus preserving the legitimacy and credibility of this vital international body.

Furthermore, Oman welcomed the Security Council’s resolution supporting a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The Sultanate urged all parties to take serious steps towards its immediate implementation and called on the international community to hold the Israeli state accountable for ceasing its aggression against the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories. Oman stressed that these measures are essential for achieving a two-state solution and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, thereby supporting peace and stability in the region.
