Oman Clarifies Procedures for Supporting Families of Missing Insured Individuals

Oman

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Social Protection Fund of Oman has outlined approved procedures for establishing the disappearance of an insured individual or pension beneficiary, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring continued financial support for affected families under all circumstances.

According to the Fund, Article (63) of the Social Protection Law provides for the payment of a monthly allowance to eligible beneficiaries of a missing person. The allowance is equivalent to the pension that would have been payable in the event of the insured individual’s death and is granted from the date the disappearance is legally established, ensuring the stability of the family’s living conditions.

The Fund explained that the process begins with reporting the disappearance to the relevant police station, followed by the preparation of an official report detailing the circumstances of the case. Subsequently, an official certificate is issued, forming the legal basis for submitting an application for financial support to the Fund.

Upon receiving the application, the Fund reviews the case and disburses the allowance in accordance with the provisions of the law and its implementing regulations.

The Fund also highlighted that employers are responsible for reporting cases of disappearance once they become aware of them, as part of an integrated institutional framework.

Regarding the continuity of support, the Fund clarified that if four years pass from the date of disappearance, or if death is confirmed either factually or through a judicial ruling, the allowance is converted into a permanent pension payable to eligible beneficiaries in line with legal entitlements.

However, if the missing individual is later confirmed to be alive, the allowance will be suspended or the pension cancelled. In cases where the disappearance is found to have been intentional, the individual will be legally required to repay all funds received, in accordance with applicable legal procedures.

The Social Protection Fund emphasized that these measures are designed to protect the rights of families and maintain their financial stability in exceptional circumstances.
