Oman Condemns Israeli Aggression Against Gaza and Calls for Global Support at UNESCO Session

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman has strongly condemned the ongoing aggression by Israeli occupation forces against the Gaza Strip, particularly the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians and vital infrastructure, including educational and relief facilities. This stance was articulated during Oman’s participation in the 221st Session of the UNESCO Executive Board, currently being held at the organization’s headquarters in Paris, France, until April 17, 2025.

Her Excellency Ambassador Amna bint Salem Al Balushi, Oman’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, represented the Sultanate at the session. In her address, Ambassador Al Balushi expressed Oman’s appreciation for UNESCO’s successful implementation of its various programs despite the challenges faced globally. She urged the organization to continue providing support to countries dealing with crises and emergencies, particularly Arab nations enduring severe humanitarian situations, including the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Yemen.

Ambassador Al Balushi also extended Oman’s condolences to Myanmar and Thailand following the recent devastating earthquake in Myanmar, underscoring the importance of global solidarity in times of crisis. She emphasized the urgency of accelerating progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on education, and advocated for the inclusion of a specific cultural goal in the post-2030 development agenda. Furthermore, she highlighted the need for intensified efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and promote environmental and green education.

Oman has already taken practical steps in collaboration with UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector, including the registration of a geological park and two nature reserves aimed at preserving biodiversity and conserving natural heritage. Ambassador Al Balushi reiterated Oman’s appreciation for UNESCO’s efforts in supporting member states in safeguarding their cultural heritage and fostering peace-building and intercultural dialogue.

She also mentioned the “Ship of Oman Youth” initiative for sustainable peace and cultural dialogue, which has been recognized on UNESCO’s List of Best Practices. The initiative is set to embark on a journey in May, visiting over 23 cities across Asia, Europe, and Africa, with the mission of promoting the values of coexistence and peace among diverse communities.

Ambassador Al Balushi’s address reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to global peace, cultural preservation, and sustainable development, highlighting the country’s proactive role in supporting UNESCO’s efforts to address global challenges.
