Oman Launches Space Observation Project at Al Hajar Al Gharbi Starlight Reserve

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Oman has taken a significant step toward advancing its space and technology sector as the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) and the Environment Authority (EA) signed a cooperation programme with Astronomical Technology Trading Company to establish astronomical observatories and ground stations.
The agreement focuses on developing facilities at the Al Hajar Al Gharbi Starlight Reserve in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, as part of a technological sandbox initiative aimed at supporting scientific research and fostering growth in Oman’s emerging space sector.
The project will involve the installation of advanced observatories and satellite communication and tracking stations, leveraging the reserve’s clear skies and minimal light pollution—conditions ideal for space science experiments and astronomical observation.
Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the objectives of the Omani Space Sector Policy (2023–2033) and supports the National Digital Economy Programme by encouraging innovation, research, and foreign investment in advanced technologies.
Under the cooperation framework, the Environment Authority will oversee site management and ensure environmental sustainability, while MTCIT will supervise technical implementation and infrastructure development. Astronomical Technology Trading Company will be responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the facilities in accordance with international standards.
The project is expected to strengthen Oman’s position as a regional hub for space observation and research, while also promoting sustainable scientific tourism and enhancing the country’s global technological profile.
