Paris, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman is actively participating in the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee, a specialized body under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), currently taking place at the organization’s headquarters in Paris.

Oman’s delegation is led by H.E. Amina Salim Al Balushi, Permanent Delegate of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO.

The ongoing session will consider the inscription of over 30 new sites on the World Heritage List and will assess the conservation status of approximately 250 registered heritage sites. Discussions will focus on the environmental and developmental challenges facing these sites, along with the implementation of strategies for their sustainable management.

Key topics under review include the impact of climate change on heritage properties, community involvement in heritage protection, methods for conserving sites at risk, and the evaluation of national and international plans aimed at preserving the outstanding universal value of World Heritage properties.

Oman’s participation reflects its steadfast commitment to the protection of cultural and natural heritage and the transmission of this legacy to future generations. It also enhances Oman’s presence in global cultural platforms, supports the nation’s heritage initiatives, and reaffirms its adherence to the principles outlined in the International Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Oman has five registered sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Bahla Fort (1987), the archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khatm, and Al-Ayn (1988), the Aflaj Irrigation Systems (2006), the Land of Frankincense (2000), and the ancient city of Qalhat (2018).
