Oman Reopens Refurbished Corridor at UN Headquarters in New York

New York, The Gulf Observer: Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman, sponsored a reception hosted by Ambassador Omar Said Omar Alkathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, marking the reopening of the refurbished Oman Corridor at UN headquarters. The cultural corridor was first inaugurated in 1986.
The event was attended by Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General, and Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th session of the General Assembly, along with senior international figures, representatives of member states, and diplomats.
The newly renovated Oman Corridor reflects the Sultanate’s diplomatic message as a nation committed to friendship, dialogue, and cooperation. The space showcases a variety of Omani artefacts that symbolize peace, sustainability, and openness. Among the exhibits are the traditional silver khanjar, inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, as well as traditional jewellery crafted with modern recycled elements and frankincense burners fashioned from repurposed building materials.
The display also highlights the ancient Aflaj irrigation system, representing a spirit of cooperation central to Oman’s diplomacy, alongside a lashed plank that illustrates the artistry of traditional shipbuilding and Oman’s historic role in connecting continents and peoples.
In his remarks, the Foreign Minister emphasized that the cultural space embodies Oman’s vision of promoting peace and coexistence while underscoring its contributions to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He noted that Oman’s long-standing tradition of upcycling everyday objects reflects both resourcefulness and an enduring balance between practicality and artistry.
Both the UN Deputy Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly praised the initiative, affirming that the Oman Corridor will serve as a meaningful cultural addition for visitors to the United Nations, and a space that embodies the principles of partnership and mutual respect.
