Dakhliyah Region by Q3 2024

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: In a significant stride towards enhancing veterinary services for camels, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in Oman has announced the imminent construction of a specialized camel hospital in the Al Bashaer area of Dakhliyah. Expected to commence operations in the third quarter of 2024, this initiative represents a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to bolster veterinary care, particularly for racing camels.

Adel Sulaiman al Shereiqi, Director of Directorate General of Agricultural and Water Resources in Dakhliyah, elucidated the project’s objectives, emphasizing the ministry’s commitment to elevating the standard of veterinary care for camels. “An agreement was signed in 2023 with a private sector entity to manage the camel hospital, marking a significant step towards enhancing the quality of veterinary care in the region,” Shereiqi stated.

Beyond the camel hospital venture, Shereiqi highlighted the ministry’s multifaceted efforts to fortify food security in Dakhliyah. In 2023, the ministry introduced four investment opportunities via the Tatweer platform, aiming to support sustainable agricultural and livestock practices within the governorate.

A recent livestock census in Dakhliyah recorded a total of 372,679 animals, including sheep, goats, cows, and camels. The ministry has actively facilitated the sector’s expansion by issuing licenses for veterinary clinics, pharmacies, veterinary professionals, and various livestock projects. Notably, 24 licenses for veterinary clinics and pharmacies, 31 licenses for veterinary professionals, and 53 licenses for diverse livestock projects have been granted via the Invest Easy portal.

Highlighting the ministry’s commitment to genetic diversity and sustainable agricultural practices, Shereiqi emphasized ongoing efforts to distribute improved breeds of goats and sheep among prominent livestock breeders in the region. This strategic initiative aims to preserve local breeds and contribute to the agricultural sustainability of Dakhliyah.

The forthcoming camel hospital stands as a testament to Oman’s dedication to advancing veterinary services and supporting the agricultural sector, positioning itself as a pivotal hub for cameline activities in the Dakhliyah region.
