Oman’s Shura Council to Host Minister of Economy for In-Depth Discussion on Oman’s Economic Performance

Muscat, The Gulf Observer: Oman’s Shura Council is set to host Said Mohammed Al Saqri, Minister of Economy, on Wednesday, 28 February 2024, for a comprehensive discussion on the performance of the Omani economy and initiatives aimed at bolstering the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary General of the Shura Council, highlighted the significance of this meeting, noting that it will mark the initiation of ministerial statements during the first meeting of the 10th term.

In an official statement, Sheikh Al Nadabi stated, “We will delve into several critical topics, focusing on the performance of the Omani economy and the noteworthy initiatives and projects led by the Ministry of Economy to enhance the GDP contribution.”

The discussion will revolve around three main topics:

  1. Performance of the Omani Economy and Ministry of Economy Initiatives:
    • Evaluation of the Omani economy’s performance.
    • Highlighting key initiatives and projects of the Ministry of Economy aimed at increasing the contribution of targeted economic sectors to the GDP.
    • Analyzing growth rates achieved and assessing the performance of the National Programme for Economic Diversification.
    • Identifying and addressing prominent challenges faced by the economic diversification initiatives.
  2. Assessment of Overall Economic Performance:
    • Examining the economic performance until the middle of the tenth five-year development plan (2021-2025).
  3. Ministry of Economy’s Role in Confronting Regional and International Economic Changes:
    • Reviewing economic policies and draft laws related to development planning.
    • Evaluating measures taken to enhance the competitiveness of the Sultanate of Oman in various global indicators.

The discussion of the ministry’s statement is in accordance with Article (69) of the Oman Council Law, which mandates the Shura Council to decide on the program of ministerial statements and their discussion topics at the beginning of each annual session. This decision is based on a joint proposal from the Council’s office, the heads of the permanent committees, and the President of the Council, ensuring a comprehensive examination of crucial economic matters.

The Shura Council will convene its fifth regular session of the first annual meeting for the 10th term (2023-2027) on February 28, providing a platform for informed discussions that will contribute to shaping Oman’s economic trajectory.
