Prabowo and Macron Hold Talks on Strengthening Indonesia-France Relations
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: In a significant diplomatic engagement, Indonesia’s Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace on Wednesday. The high-level discussion focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing global security issues.
Brigadier General Edwin Adrian Sumantha, head of the public relations bureau of the ministry secretariat general, reported on Thursday that the meeting was a part of Prabowo’s visit to the French presidential residence.
Upon his arrival, Prabowo was cordially welcomed by President Macron and the presidential guard in the front yard of the Élysée Palace. The leaders exchanged greetings, held a brief conversation, and posed for photographs before proceeding to their official discussion.
During the meeting, Prabowo expressed his confidence in President Macron’s commitment to enhancing the robust relations between Indonesia and France, which were established in September 1950.
“We commend His Excellency President Macron for his important and active role in the success of our bilateral relations,” Prabowo stated.
Prabowo also took the opportunity to congratulate the French people on hosting the Summer Olympics in Paris from July 24 to August 11, 2024.
“We believe the Olympics will be a huge success, showcasing the amazing talents of athletes from around the world and uniting countries in the spirit of real friendship and competition,” he added.
Prabowo’s tenure at the Defense Ministry has been marked by his proactive approach in acquiring French-made defense equipment to bolster Indonesia’s national defense capabilities. This year, Indonesia purchased 42 Rafale fighter jets from Dassault Aviation under a gradual purchase contract initiated in 2022 and 2023, with the first jets expected to be delivered in 2026.
In April 2024, Indonesia further strengthened its defense arsenal by announcing the purchase of two Scorpene Evolved submarines from the Naval Group, along with 13 GCI radar systems from Thales, which will be produced in collaboration with the state-owned PT Len Industri.
The meeting between Prabowo and Macron underscores the deepening ties and strategic partnership between Indonesia and France, highlighting a shared commitment to global security and cooperation.
