Prabowo Urges ASEAN Unity Amid Global Fragmentation at 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has urged ASEAN member states to uphold unity and centrality as the global order faces increasing instability and fragmentation.
The President delivered his remarks during the retreat session of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday. His official statement was released by the Presidential Secretariat on Monday.
President Prabowo emphasized that ASEAN’s unity and centrality remain the cornerstone for maintaining the region’s stability, independence, and credibility on the international stage.
“Unity and centrality are not just keywords. Without them, we risk being divided by greater powers,” he stated.
He highlighted that ASEAN’s enduring strength lies not in confrontation but in its continued ability to build constructive and inclusive engagement with all partners. Through this approach, he noted, ASEAN has consistently managed to navigate complex regional challenges through dialogue and mutual respect.
Turning to maritime security, President Prabowo underscored the need for ASEAN to maintain a collective stance in safeguarding the principles of international maritime law. He called on member states to uphold the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 and to work together toward finalizing an effective and substantive Code of Conduct (COC) in the coming year.
In conclusion, President Prabowo reiterated his call for stronger solidarity among ASEAN nations to address emerging global and regional challenges.
“ASEAN’s unity is not merely a slogan—it is a path toward a peaceful and prosperous future,” he affirmed, reaffirming Indonesia’s commitment to advancing peace, prosperity, and the welfare of its people.
The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are being held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) from October 26 to 28, 2025, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.”
