President Ilham Aliyev

New York, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with Adebayo Ogunlesi, Founding Partner, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a leading global infrastructure investment management company, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The discussions centered on expanding international partnership opportunities in the infrastructure sector and the role of joint investments in strengthening regional economic ties.

President Aliyev noted the successful cooperation established in 2024 between the State Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan and GIP, particularly highlighting their joint investment in Italo, Italy’s premier high-speed rail operator, as a notable example of effective collaboration. The Head of State also underscored the company’s expertise in areas such as airport management, energy transition, and artificial intelligence infrastructure, which he said open new avenues for future cooperation.

Ogunlesi emphasized that Azerbaijan’s strategic geographic position and its focus on sustainable development create significant opportunities for long-term infrastructure investments. He reaffirmed GIP’s interest in deepening cooperation with Azerbaijan, particularly in the fields of energy transition, transportation, and digital infrastructure.

Founded in 2006 in the United States, Global Infrastructure Partners manages assets worth approximately $170 billion and operates through offices in New York, London, Singapore, Sydney, and other major financial centers. One of its renewable energy subsidiaries ranks among the leading firms in the U.S. sector.
