President Ilham Aliyev Meets UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach in Baku
Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Anacláudia Rossbach on Thursday.
During the meeting, the two sides emphasized the significance of the UN-Habitat Executive Director’s participation in the 3rd Azerbaijan National Urban Forum, held in the city of Khankendi, noting its importance in advancing dialogue on sustainable urban development.
Anacláudia Rossbach commended the excellent organization of the forum, highlighting that the event addressed some of the most pressing global urban development challenges. Both sides lauded the successful hosting of several national urban forums in Azerbaijan within the framework of the ongoing Azerbaijan–UN-Habitat partnership.
The discussion also focused on the large-scale restoration and reconstruction projects being implemented in the Karabakh and East Zangezur economic regions, where Azerbaijan is applying a modern model of urban development in rebuilding cities and villages liberated from occupation.
Rossbach expressed her gratitude to Azerbaijan for its voluntary financial contributions to UN-Habitat and continued support for the organization’s initiatives. She also praised Azerbaijan’s successful hosting of COP29, noting with satisfaction that the event effectively integrated the climate agenda with urbanization efforts, and commended Azerbaijan’s proactive role in this regard.
The meeting further included an exchange of views on preparations for the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum, one of the UN’s most prestigious global platforms, which Azerbaijan will host in 2026. Both sides expressed confidence that the event will be organized at a high level, consistent with Azerbaijan’s track record of successfully hosting major international gatherings.
The conversation concluded with discussions on future prospects for cooperation between Azerbaijan and UN-Habitat, aimed at further advancing sustainable urbanization and development initiatives.
