President Jokowi Commends Community Efforts in Combating Climate Change

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expressed his admiration for community groups committed to addressing the environmental challenges posed by climate change and mining activities. In his address at the LIKE 2 Expo Festival held on Friday, the President emphasized the critical role of collective action in preserving the environment.

“I praise the community groups’ care in protecting the environment and handling climate change, which cannot be handled by the government alone but by the whole country,” President Jokowi stated. He highlighted that the responsibility for maintaining the Earth’s sustainability extends beyond government actions, encompassing the efforts of policymakers and community movements alike.

The President underscored the grave consequences of failing to uphold environmental sustainability, warning of diminished human quality of life, increased drought, and threatened food supplies. “The energy and mining sectors are the most impactful,” he remarked, stressing the importance of proper management in these areas.

President Jokowi pointed out that effective management of the forestry and energy sectors is crucial to avoid negative outcomes. “If we mismanage them, they will disadvantage us,” he noted. Among the government’s initiatives to protect the environment is the establishment of nurseries aimed at forest rehabilitation. He stressed that every mining area must have nurseries dedicated to environmental recovery, underscoring the vital role of the Environment and Forestry Ministry in this effort.

The LIKE 2 Expo Festival, running from August 8 to 11, is a program initiated by the Environment and Forestry Ministry. The festival serves as a platform for showcasing real actions, improving policies, and driving change in the forestry and environmental sectors.

Sigit Reliantoro, the Director of Environmental Damage and Pollution Control at the Environment and Forestry Ministry, affirmed the ministry’s commitment to showcasing green technology and exploring its potential future use at the festival. The event features various technological exhibits, including geothermal technology, solar power plant development plans, green hydrogen, and green ammonia.

The President’s remarks and the festival’s focus on sustainable practices underscore Indonesia’s dedication to addressing environmental challenges and promoting green technologies for a more sustainable future.
