Cairo, The Gulf Observer: Vietnamese State President Lương Cường led a high-ranking delegation to the headquarters of the Arab League (AL) in Cairo on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the deepening of ties between Vietnam and the Arab world. The visit underscored Hanoi’s determination to promote more substantive and effective cooperation with the Arab League and its 22 member states, many of whom are long-standing friends and vital economic partners of Vietnam.

The visit commenced with a solemn flag hoisting ceremony of the Socialist Republic of Việt Nam at the Arab League headquarters, symbolizing mutual respect and expanding partnership.

Immediately following the ceremony, President Cường held talks with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit. During the meeting, the Vietnamese leader commended the Arab League for its proactive and constructive role in fostering peace, stability, and development across the Middle East, Africa, and beyond. He expressed his strong belief that the League would continue achieving greater successes in building a unified, prosperous, and dynamic regional community.

To strengthen the already warm relations, President Cường called for intensified political and diplomatic engagement to bolster trust and mutual understanding between Việt Nam and the AL member states. He urged both sides to accelerate the implementation of existing cooperation frameworks, especially the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the AL Secretariat.

Highlighting the importance of global collaboration, President Cường proposed enhancing consultation and mutual support at multilateral platforms, particularly the United Nations (UN) and the Non-Aligned Movement. He also welcomed the idea of stronger AL–ASEAN cooperation and reaffirmed Việt Nam’s readiness to act as a bridge connecting the Arab League with Southeast Asia.

In his remarks, Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit described the Vietnamese President’s visit as historic, being the first by a Vietnamese head of state to the AL headquarters. He stressed that the visit reflected Vietnam’s high regard for the League and the enduring friendship between the Vietnamese and Arab peoples.

Recalling the shared history of national liberation movements, Gheit praised Vietnam’s struggle for independence as an inspiration for many Arab nations. He emphasized his admiration for late President Hồ Chí Minh and noted Vietnam’s transformation into a dynamic and resilient economy as a model for developing countries.

The Secretary-General expressed deep appreciation for Vietnam’s principled and balanced positions on international matters, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter—particularly its consistent support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

He reaffirmed the Arab League’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Vietnam and pledged to do his utmost to advance ties between Vietnam and all 22 AL member states.

The visit is seen as a pivotal step in expanding Vietnam’s diplomatic engagement in the Arab region and fostering greater multilateral collaboration for shared peace and development.
