President Nicușor Dan to Hold Consultations with Parliamentary Parties on June 19 for Prime Minister Nomination

Bucharest, The Gulf Observer: President Nicușor Dan will convene consultations with Romania’s parliamentary parties on Thursday, June 19, to discuss the nomination of the country’s next Prime Minister, the Presidential Administration officially announced.
The consultations come amid ongoing negotiations between the major political factions — the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). Over the past three weeks, these parties have been working to finalize a governing program and agree on critical fiscal measures aimed at curbing the nation’s expanding budget deficit.
Romania is currently under significant pressure to address its deteriorating fiscal situation. The budget deficit is expected to reach 8.6% of GDP this year, surpassing the 7.0% target. In 2024, the public deficit stood at 9.3% of GDP (ESA terms), exceeding both the Government’s January estimate of 8.6% and the 7.9% initially projected under last autumn’s fiscal consolidation plan.
This round of consultations is particularly crucial as the term of the caretaker Government, led by Prime Minister Cătălin Predoiu, constitutionally limited to 45 days, concludes on June 20.
