President Prabowo Thanks Russia for Supporting Indonesia’s BRICS Membership at SPIEF 2025

St. Petersburg, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, extended his appreciation to the Russian Government for its support in facilitating Indonesia’s membership in BRICS, an influential intergovernmental organization aimed at promoting global stability and economic prosperity.
“We thank the Government of Russia for promptly supporting us to become a member of BRICS,” President Prabowo stated during his address at the 2025 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday.
In his speech, the Indonesian leader underscored the country’s proactive engagement in global affairs. In addition to joining BRICS in January 2025, Indonesia was also officially accepted as a member of the New Development Bank (NDB) on March 25, 2025 — a significant milestone achieved within a short timeframe.
President Prabowo also conveyed his gratitude to the Governments of China and South Africa for their backing of Indonesia’s BRICS membership, and expressed appreciation to NDB President Dilma Vana Rousseff for supporting Indonesia’s inclusion in the bank.
“We believe that together, BRICS can contribute significantly to the stability and prosperity of the world,” he affirmed.
With its accession, Indonesia joins the ranks of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as a full BRICS member. Its participation in the New Development Bank further enhances the country’s role in shaping sustainable economic growth and financing major infrastructure initiatives in developing countries.
The NDB, founded by BRICS nations, focuses on infrastructure development and poverty alleviation, with a strong emphasis on supporting industrialization to spur job creation.
President Prabowo’s attendance at SPIEF 2025 was at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. His visit to St. Petersburg from June 18 to 20 included a bilateral meeting with President Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace, where the two leaders witnessed the signing of four bilateral agreements between Indonesia and Russia, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
