Astana, The Gulf Observer: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Monday chaired a meeting of the Security Council focused on strengthening the resilience of the country’s national energy system, according to the Akorda press service.

During the meeting, reports were presented by Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, as well as several heads of government agencies, outlining the current state of the energy sector and key challenges facing its sustainable development.

President Tokayev подчеркнул that in today’s realities, energy security is a critical factor in ensuring national independence and economic resilience. He noted that Kazakhstan’s existing resource base is generally sufficient to achieve self-sufficiency in electricity generation, while stressing that rising demand makes the rational and efficient use of resources increasingly important.

The discussion also underscored the need to develop domestic maneuvering capacities within the energy system. Along with expanding gas-fired generation and energy storage solutions, the President said the potential of hydropower remains highly relevant for balancing the energy mix and enhancing system flexibility.

The Head of State further emphasised the importance of the broad implementation of water-saving technologies across agriculture, industry and other sectors of the economy, in order to ensure sustainable use of water and energy resources.

Special attention was given to scientific, technological and personnel challenges confronting the energy sector. The meeting highlighted the need to train skilled professionals and to develop a solid scientific research base, particularly to support the advancement of hydropower and related technologies.

Following the meeting, President Tokayev tasked the Government and regional governors with specific measures to address systemic issues and ensure the long-term resilience and reliability of Kazakhstan’s energy sector.
