Romania Intercepts Russian Drone Violating National Airspace

Bucharest, The Gulf Observer: Romania on Saturday intercepted a Russian drone that had entered its national airspace near the Danube, Romanian authorities confirmed. The incident prompted a swift response from the Romanian Air Force, with two F-16 fighter jets from the 86th Air Base tracking the drone until it exited Romanian airspace approximately 50 minutes later. Two German Eurofighters were also deployed to monitor the situation.
Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu described the violation as “unacceptable and reckless,” emphasizing that Romanian citizens were never in danger. She stated, “Romania condemns Russia’s behaviour and takes the necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and security. We are in constant contact with our EU and NATO partners and allies regarding provocations by Russia, including this latest one.”
Țoiu further called for increased measures against Russia, including rapid adoption of the 19th EU sanctions package and full implementation of NATO’s ‘Eastern Sentry’ operation, while signaling that she would raise the issue at the United Nations General Assembly to ensure strict international adherence to sanctions.
Minister of National Defence Ionuț Moşteanu confirmed the interception, noting that the drone was tracked near Chilia Veche and that the population remained safe. He said, “Romania condemns Russia’s reckless behavior, which threatens regional stability. Together with our NATO Allies, we remain vigilant and ready to defend every inch of Allied airspace.”
The Romanian government emphasized that it is maintaining close coordination with NATO and EU partners to respond to provocations and safeguard regional security.
