Romania to Participate as Observer at Washington Board of Peace Summit on Gaza

Bucharest, The Gulf Observer: President Nicușor Dan has announced that Romania will participate as an observer in the first summit organized in Washington under the Board of Peace initiative.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, February 15, the president stated that the decision follows the mandate granted by the United Nations Security Council to the Board of Peace to establish a temporary International Stabilisation Force in Gaza.
The summit, hosted in Washington, D.C., comes amid limited consensus among European Union member states. Most EU countries have reportedly chosen not to attend. While Hungary and Bulgaria accepted full membership in the Board, Italy opted for observer status similar to Romania.
President Dan explained that constitutional constraints and Romania’s prior international commitments prevent the country from accepting full membership. “Romania will have observer status, and I will reaffirm our firm support for international peace efforts and openness to participate in the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip,” he wrote.
He emphasized that Romania’s presence at the discussions is grounded in support for the diplomatic framework established by the resolution adopted in November by the UN Security Council, initiated by the United States of America. The president reiterated Romania’s consistent backing for efforts aimed at ending the conflict and highlighted the country’s humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza, including emergency medical evacuation operations.
In a separate post on X, Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu reaffirmed Romania’s alignment with the European Union’s stance on the Gaza crisis. According to Mediafax, she stated that Romania would continue to support the peace process, expand humanitarian aid through joint European mechanisms, and uphold the two-state solution.
Addressing concerns over the limited role of observer members, President Dan stressed the importance of maintaining Romania’s traditional engagement in the Middle East. He noted that developments in Gaza are of significant importance for Europe and underlined Romania’s longstanding relations with both Israel and Arab countries in the region.
The Romanian leadership maintained that continued diplomatic engagement and participation in international forums remain essential to contributing constructively to regional stability and post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
