Romanian Ambassador Reaffirms Support for Ukraine on Fourth Anniversary of Russian Invasion

Islamabad, The Gulf Observer: The Ambassador of Romania to Pakistan, H.E. Dan Stoenescu, on Wednesday reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for Ukraine as diplomats and dignitaries gathered in Islamabad to mark four years since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking at a commemorative event, Ambassador Stoenescu reflected on what he described as four years of tragedy in the heart of Europe, noting that millions have been killed, wounded, or forced to flee their homes since the onset of the conflict. He underscored the profound human cost of the war and its far-reaching global consequences.
“Four years during which millions of people have been affected — killed, wounded, or forced to flee their homes. Four years of tragedy in the heart of Europe,” the ambassador said, emphasizing that the conflict has already lasted longer than the Second World War.
The Romanian envoy reiterated that Romania has consistently supported Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, firmly advocating for respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and international law. He highlighted Bucharest’s substantial humanitarian assistance to Ukraine and its efforts to facilitate the transit of Ukrainian grain through Romanian ports to help safeguard global food security.
Ambassador Stoenescu also noted Romania’s active contribution to European Union and NATO initiatives aimed at strengthening regional security, particularly in the strategically significant Black Sea region. At the same time, he stressed that any peace settlement must be determined by Ukraine itself, reaffirming Romania’s position against sending combat troops into the conflict.
“In the face of Russia’s invasion, respect for international law means acknowledging that neutrality is not an option when the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity are under attack,” he stated.
The event was organized by European Union Member States in collaboration with the EU Delegation and was hosted by the Embassy of Poland. Diplomats from numerous friendly countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Japan, attended the gathering, alongside journalists, civil society representatives, and prominent Pakistani figures.
The commemoration underscored the continued solidarity of European and international partners with Ukraine and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding international law and regional stability.
