Romanian Foreign Minister Addresses UN General Assembly

New York, The Gulf Observer: Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu delivered Romania’s address at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, underscoring the special significance of the occasion as the country marks 70 years since its accession to the UN and 80 years since the organization’s establishment.
In her remarks, Minister Țoiu outlined Romania’s strategic priorities for a safer and more just world, stressing dialogue as a means to achieve peace in ongoing conflicts and reaffirming the importance of upholding a rules-based international order. She drew inspiration from Romania’s diplomatic tradition, recalling Nicolae Titulescu, the former president of the League of Nations, as she presented key elements of the global agenda requiring concrete action.
Highlighting the need for reform of the UN Security Council, the Romanian Foreign Minister stated that it is “a moral and legal inconsistency for an aggressive state to retain the power to block, through the right of veto, any international action aimed at stopping a war it has itself initiated.” She called for a fundamental reform of this instrument to ensure it can no longer be paralyzed by those violating the UN Charter.
Turning to regional issues, Țoiu voiced strong solidarity with the Republic of Moldova, drawing attention to the parliamentary elections taking place there and denouncing the unprecedented scale of disinformation campaigns and external interference, which she attributed to the Russian Federation. She stressed that such actions threaten the sovereign right of Moldovan citizens to determine their own future.
On the Middle East, the minister called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages, and guaranteed access for humanitarian assistance to civilians. She reiterated Romania’s long-standing support for a two-state solution, which the country has backed for over three decades.
Additionally, Țoiu reaffirmed Romania’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while underlining the nation’s commitment to advancing human rights, addressing climate change, and promoting sustainable development.
