Brussels

Brussels, The Gulf Observer: The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Oana Țoiu, held a meeting today in Brussels with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, as part of her official visit to the Belgian capital.

During their discussions, the two officials addressed several key issues on the current agenda of the European Union, including regional security, the EU enlargement process, negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), and recent developments in the Middle East.

In relation to the enlargement process, both sides underlined the importance of sustained support for the European aspirations of candidate countries. Minister Țoiu reaffirmed Romania’s strong backing for the continued European integration of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, as well as the Western Balkan candidates.

Minister Țoiu also emphasized Romania’s support for a post-2027 EU budget that is both ambitious and responsive to present challenges, while ensuring a balance between the objectives of cohesion, convergence, and competitiveness.

The meeting further highlighted the European Parliament’s commitment to strengthening the EU’s security and defense dimension amid current geopolitical developments. President Metsola expressed solidarity with Romania and other affected member states in light of recent airspace incursions, describing them as serious challenges requiring firm and coordinated action.

President Metsola also reiterated her consistent support for the EU accession of candidate countries from the Eastern Neighbourhood and the Western Balkans, stressing the need for the Union to accelerate the integration process, particularly for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

In this context, Minister Țoiu reaffirmed Romania’s steadfast commitment to continue assisting Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova in pursuing their European path, commending both nations for their substantial reform progress despite the ongoing challenges posed by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
