Russia, Kyrgyzstan in Talks to Localize Russian Automobile Production

Cholpon-Ata, The Gulf Observer: Russia and Kyrgyzstan are holding discussions on the potential localization of Russian automobile manufacturing in Kyrgyzstan, with agreements on vehicle supply contracts expected to be finalized soon, according to Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Roman Chekushev.

Chekushev made the remarks on the sidelines of the Kyrgyz-Russian Economic Forum recently held in Cholpon-Ata. He highlighted the global trend of establishing local production facilities in markets where automakers seek to expand their presence.

“Kyrgyzstan is no exception to this trend. That’s why we expect several discussions to take place regarding the potential localization of Russian automobile manufacturers within the country,” Chekushev stated.

He emphasized Russia’s strengths in both passenger and commercial vehicle production and reaffirmed Moscow’s interest in reaching concrete supply agreements with Kyrgyz partners.

The initiative comes at a challenging time for Russia’s domestic auto industry. In the first half of 2025, passenger vehicle production in Russia fell by 2.1 percent compared to the same period last year, with a sharp 28 percent decline recorded in June versus June 2024.
