Samarkand Hosts 31st WOAH Regional Conference

Samarkand, The Gulf Observer: Samarkand is hosting the 31st Conference of the WOAH (World Organisation for Animal Health) Regional Commission for Europe, marking a significant milestone in global animal health efforts. WOAH, the leading authority on animal health, has been dedicated to safeguarding animal and public health since its founding in 1924. It partners with international organizations such as FAO, WHO, and UNEP to address animal diseases that impact livestock, aquatic animals, wildlife, and public health.

This year’s conference coincides with the 100th anniversary of WOAH and is being held in Uzbekistan, which has been a member of the organization since 1992. The event gathers state representatives, international experts, and veterinary professionals from across Europe to discuss pressing issues in animal health.

At the opening ceremony, Bakhrom Norkobilov, Chairman of Uzbekistan’s State Veterinary Committee, delivered an address on behalf of the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, emphasizing the urgent need to combat global challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, and food security. The conference aims to explore innovative solutions, share knowledge, and coordinate international efforts in the face of these threats.

WOAH Director General, Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, was honored with Uzbekistan’s “Devotee of Veterinary Medicine” award at the ceremony. Over the five-day conference, participants will work to develop regional positions on new standards and regulations, which will be presented at future WOAH General Assemblies. Discussions will also include technical assistance for aligning Uzbekistan’s veterinary systems with World Trade Organization standards, as well as talks on exporting livestock products to the European Union.

In a key meeting, Norkobilov and Soubeyran discussed new projects aimed at advancing veterinary education, disease control, food safety, and laboratory competence, highlighting the significance of continued international cooperation in these areas.
