SDAIA and KAUST Launch Advanced AI Model for Medical Radiology Diagnosis

Riyadh, The Gulf Observer: The Center of Excellence for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have unveiled the MiniGPT-Med model, a cutting-edge multi-modal language model designed to enhance the accuracy and speed of medical radiology diagnoses using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques.

Dr. Ahmed Alsinan, AI advisor at the National Center for Artificial Intelligence and head of the scientific team at SDAIA, explained that the MiniGPT-Med model is equipped to perform a range of tasks, including generating medical reports, answering medical visual questions, describing diseases, locating diseases, identifying diseases, and documenting medical descriptions based on input medical images. The model was trained on a diverse set of medical images, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, and is specifically tailored for medical applications, demonstrating significant versatility across different imaging methods.

“The MiniGPT-Med model represents a significant advancement in AI-driven medical diagnostics,” stated Dr. Alsinan. “Developed collaboratively by AI specialists from SDAIA and KAUST, the model exhibits advanced performance in generating medical reports, achieving 19% higher efficiency compared to previous models. It serves as a general interface for radiology diagnosis, enhancing diagnostic efficiency across various medical imaging applications.”

The MiniGPT-Med model is derived from large-scale language models and has been meticulously adapted for medical use, showcasing its ability to handle various imaging methods with remarkable precision. This innovation is expected to significantly benefit medical professionals by providing a reliable AI tool for radiology diagnosis, ultimately improving patient outcomes through faster and more accurate diagnostics.

This initiative reflects the ongoing collaboration between SDAIA and KAUST in pushing the boundaries of AI technology to support and advance the healthcare sector. The introduction of the MiniGPT-Med model underscores their commitment to leveraging AI to address critical challenges in medical diagnostics and enhance the overall efficiency of healthcare delivery.
