Severe Storms Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in New South Wales

Sydney, The Gulf Observer: Tens of thousands of residents in New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, are without electricity as a low-pressure system unleashed damaging winds and heavy rainfall, prompting widespread flood warnings, according to media.

As of Saturday morning, approximately 28,000 residents in Sydney, the state capital, and 15,000 in Newcastle and the Hunter region remain without power, power company Ausgrid reported. The severe weather has disrupted services across the state, with emergency crews working to restore power and respond to incidents.

The New South Wales State Emergency Services (SES) reported 2,825 callouts for assistance since Friday, primarily addressing fallen trees and wind-damaged properties. Flooding, damaging winds, and heavy rain alerts remain active for numerous areas, the Bureau of Meteorology warned, with wind gusts of up to 100 km/h expected over alpine regions.

This comes on the heels of earlier storms this week, which caused widespread damage, uprooting trees and power lines, and leaving 200,000 residents without power.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow updates from local emergency services as severe weather conditions persist.
