Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Honours Paul Waring as Champion of the 19th Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, presented the championship trophy to English golfer Paul Waring, winner of the 19th edition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. The prestigious tournament took place over four days at the Yas Links course on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.
Organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) and the European Tour, the event was part of the DP World Tour and served as the fourth event in this season’s Rolex Series. It featured 70 top players from the Race to Dubai classification, competing for a place in next week’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
The award ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation; Aref Hamad Al Awani, General-Secretary of ADSC; Abdulfattah Sharaf, Chairman of HSBC Bank Middle East; Mohammed Al Marzooqi, CEO of HSBC Bank UAE; Bilal Mostafa Al Khaled, General Manager of Mohammed Rasool Khoory & Sons; Eric Nicoli, Chairman of the European Tour Group; and Guy Kinnings, CEO of DP World Tour.
Waring clinched victory with a score of six strokes under par on the final day, bringing his total to 24 strokes under par over the tournament’s four days. His compatriot Tyrrell Hatton finished second at 22 strokes under par, while Thorbjørn Olesen (Denmark), Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), and Matt Wallis (England) tied for third at 21 strokes under par.
Sheikh Nahyan praised the success of the championship, emphasizing Abu Dhabi’s global reputation as a premier destination for international sports events, made possible through the support and vision of the nation’s leadership. He noted that since its inception in 2006, the tournament has significantly contributed to Abu Dhabi’s tourism growth, attracting thousands of visitors and showcasing the emirate’s robust infrastructure, security, and values of tolerance and coexistence.
Aref Hamad Al Awani expressed appreciation for all partners, sponsors, volunteers, and the European Tour representatives who contributed to the championship’s success at Yas Links. He congratulated Paul Waring on his victory and highlighted Abu Dhabi’s continued prominence in hosting international sporting events, promoting golf in the region, and encouraging a daily active lifestyle through various sports programs.
Paul Waring expressed his joy at winning the championship, noting the fierce competition among elite global golfers. The victory earned Waring a grand prize of US$1.53 million and 1,500 Race to Dubai points. Tyrrell Hatton, the runner-up, secured a prize of US$990,000 and 1,000 points.
The successful completion of the 19th edition underscored Abu Dhabi’s leadership in international sports, as the tournament attracted a large audience both in person and through televised broadcasts worldwide.
