Sri Lankan PM Harini Amarasuriya Reaffirms Commitment to Quality Education During Hambantota Tour

Hambantota, The Gulf Observer: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on Wednesday reiterated that providing quality education to children remains the government’s foremost priority during an educational observation tour of the Hambantota district.
During her visit, the prime minister toured Ruhunu Vijayaba National School in Beliatta, including its primary section. She reviewed newly introduced workbooks for first-year students of 2026, assessed progress in the implementation of the core curriculum, and observed classroom activities.
In discussions with teachers, Dr. Amarasuriya underscored the government’s deep appreciation for educators and their vital role in building a civilized and progressive society. She also revealed that work is underway to establish an Education Council aimed at safeguarding teacher professionalism and ensuring the delivery of high-quality education across the country.
The prime minister emphasized the government’s commitment to eliminating infrastructure disparities among schools and ensuring equal educational opportunities for all children, regardless of their location.
She later visited Weeraketiya Rajapaksa Primary School, where she observed first-year classrooms operating under the new education reforms and interacted with students. Subsequently, she met teachers from Weeraketiya Central School and its primary section to discuss challenges related to maintaining Advanced Level classes and retaining students at that critical stage.
Concluding her tour, Dr. Amarasuriya inspected Hambantota Lunama Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya, noting that the school’s infrastructure currently exceeds its student population. She urged the administration to adopt proper planning strategies to increase enrollment, highlighting the potential benefits of fully equipped educational institutions in supporting future development initiatives.
The visit underscored the government’s broader agenda to strengthen Sri Lanka’s education system through reforms, equitable resource distribution, and enhanced institutional planning.
