State Funeral Held in Hanoi for Former President Trần Đức Lương

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: A state funeral for former Politburo member and former State President Trần Đức Lương was solemnly held at the National Funeral Hall in Hanoi on the morning of May 24, in accordance with national mourning protocols.

The funeral was organized by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), the National Assembly, the State President, the Government, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF), and the family of the former leader.

From early morning, delegations representing the Party, State, VFF, armed forces, and citizens gathered to pay their final respects to comrade Trần Đức Lương, a veteran revolutionary who dedicated his life to the nation.

At the centre of the hall, the coffin—draped in the national flag and adorned with a black mourning ribbon—was surrounded by solemn tributes. Above the coffin hung a portrait of the former President with a banner bearing the words: “Infinite sorrow for comrade Trần Đức Lương, former Politburo member, former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.”

Leading the mourning procession, a delegation from the CPV Central Committee headed by General Secretary Tô Lâm paid tribute and offered condolences to the bereaved family.

Other high-ranking delegations also paid their respects, including:

  • Politburo member and State President Lương Cường, who led the Presidential delegation and the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform in his capacity as Chairman.
  • Politburo member and Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, who headed the Government delegation.
  • Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn, leading the National Assembly delegation.
  • Politburo member and VFF Central Committee President Đỗ Văn Chiến, who led the VFF delegation.
  • Politburo member and Minister of National Defence General Phan Văn Giang, representing the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence.
  • Senior Lieutenant General Trần Quốc Tỏ, Deputy Minister of Public Security, leading the Ministry of Public Security delegation.

Former high-ranking Party and State leaders including former Party General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh, former State Presidents Nguyễn Minh Triết and Trương Tấn Sang, former Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng, and former National Assembly Chairpersons Nguyễn Sinh Hùng and Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân also attended to pay homage.

Mourning guests solemnly circled the coffin in a final farewell, honouring the late leader’s decades-long dedication to the revolutionary cause and the progress of the nation.

Simultaneous respect-paying ceremonies were held at Thống Nhất Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and at the T50 Hall of the Military Command of Quảng Ngãi Province, the former leader’s hometown.

The memorial service for comrade Trần Đức Lương is scheduled for 7:00 a.m. on May 25 at the National Funeral Hall, No. 5 Trần Thánh Tông, Hà Nội. The burial will take place at 3:00 p.m. the same day at the hometown cemetery in Phổ Khánh Commune, Đức Phổ Township, Quảng Ngãi Province.

Comrade Trần Đức Lương was born on May 5, 1937, in Phổ Khánh Commune, Đức Phổ District (now Đức Phổ Township), Quảng Ngãi Province. He resided permanently at No. 298, Vạn Phúc Street, Liễu Giai Ward, Ba Đình District, Hanoi.

Despite tireless medical efforts and the devoted care of the Party, State, medical professionals, and his family, he passed away at 22:51 on May 20, 2025, at his residence in Hà Nội due to old age and serious illness, at the age of 88.

Throughout more than 50 years of revolutionary service, comrade Trần Đức Lương made profound and distinguished contributions to the Vietnamese revolutionary cause. He was honoured with the Gold Star Order, the 65-year Party membership badge, and numerous other noble distinctions.
