Tajikistan Highlights Women’s Empowerment at UN Commission on the Status of Women

New York, The Gulf Observer: A delegation from Tajikistan participated in the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-70), which opened this week at the UN Headquarters in New York, reaffirming the country’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.
According to Tajikistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the delegation was led by Bunafsha Fayziddinzoda, Chairperson of the Committee on Women and Family Affairs under the Government of Tajikistan. On March 11, she addressed the general debate of the commission, highlighting the role of gender equality and women’s active participation in achieving sustainable development, peace, and security.
“The Republic of Tajikistan consistently supports international efforts to advance the Women, Peace, and Security agenda and pursues a state policy to increase women’s participation in the country’s political, economic, and social life,” Fayziddinzoda said.
The delegation noted that the Tajik government has significantly increased funding for the Committee on Women and Family Affairs. The committee’s budget for 2022–2026 has risen by 151 percent, reflecting the country’s growing focus on protecting women’s rights and expanding opportunities for women.
Officials reported that about 28 percent of members of parliament and more than 30 percent of civil servants in Tajikistan are women, demonstrating progress in women’s representation in public institutions. In the education sector, girls now make up more than half of university students, indicating the emergence of a new generation of female leaders.
The delegation also highlighted measures introduced under the leadership of President Emomali Rahmon to support women’s professional development, entrepreneurship, and rights protection.
In addition, Tajikistan emphasized the important role women play in natural resource management, including water governance, as well as in addressing climate change challenges.
During the session, participants were invited to attend the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028,” scheduled to take place in Dushanbe from May 25 to 28, 2026.
The 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women will continue its proceedings at UN Headquarters until March 19.
