Bangkok, The Gulf Observer: Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over the opening ceremony of the Yaowarat Chinese New Year Celebration on January 29, 2025. The event also commemorates the 50th anniversary of Thai-Chinese diplomatic relations, adding significance to this year’s festivities.

The celebration, held on January 29 and 30, is a collaborative effort by the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Samphanthawong Cultural Council, Gold Traders Association, Thai Charoen Corporation (TCC) Group, and local businesses.

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool highlighted the event as a milestone for Thai-Chinese relations. The festivities will feature Thai-Chinese cultural performances by artists from China and across Thailand. The streets around the iconic Chaloem Phrakiat Arch will be adorned with dazzling lights under the theme “Ignite Your Senses, Embrace Our Two Cultures.”

During the opening ceremony, which will be broadcast live, Her Royal Highness is expected to tour the various booths and stores set up for the occasion.

BMA Permanent Secretary Wanthanee Watthana emphasized the event’s role in showcasing the rich traditions of the Chinese diaspora in Thailand, fostering community unity, and stimulating the local economy.

“This celebration reflects the deep-rooted relationship between Thailand and China while promoting heritage preservation in the heart of a modern city,” said Ms. Wanthanee.

Cultural highlights include exhibitions on the Thai-Chinese diplomatic relationship and the history of Yaowarat Road, along with photographs of Her Royal Highness’ previous visits to Yaowarat’s New Year festivities. Visitors can enjoy unique photo booths styled as traditional Chinese taverns and rickshaws, cultural performances, and concerts on two stages.

Panote Sirivadhanabhakdi, event chairman, noted the launch of Chinatown Market Chaloemburi, a new landmark celebrating Yaowarat’s vibrant cultural and economic revival after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The world’s largest Chinatown has regained its dynamism, and we are proud to host this iconic event,” said Mr. Panote.

The Yaowarat Chinese New Year Celebration is set to be a vibrant cultural and diplomatic showcase, uniting locals and international visitors alike in celebrating a shared heritage.
