Türkiye Opens First Earthquake Monitoring Station Abroad in Azerbaijan
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: In a significant milestone, Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has launched its inaugural earthquake monitoring station outside of Türkiye, located in Shusha, Azerbaijan. This new establishment marks a pivotal step in the deep-rooted and strong cooperation between the two nations.
AFAD announced the opening of the “Derinkuyu” earthquake monitoring station on Wednesday via a post on X, underscoring the collaborative effort between AFAD and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
“Our first ‘Derinkuyu’ earthquake monitoring station abroad started operating in Shusha city of friendly and brotherly country Azerbaijan,” the statement read.
The station, constructed to enhance seismic monitoring capabilities, can track earthquakes occurring in various parts of the globe. The project involved drilling to a depth of 100 meters, where two high-sensitivity earthquake sensors were installed. These sensors, encased in steel pipes for protection, are designed to measure both ground speed and ground acceleration with high precision. This advanced setup allows the station to record micro vibrations with minimal interference from surface noise.
This initiative not only reinforces the scientific collaboration between Türkiye and Azerbaijan but also contributes significantly to global earthquake monitoring and disaster preparedness efforts.
