Turkmenistan and Iraq Hold Political Consultations in Baghdad to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Baghdad, The Gulf Observer: A delegation from Turkmenistan, led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Gurbanov, paid a working visit to the Republic of Iraq from October 20–21, 2025.
During the visit, political consultations were held between the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and Iraq. The Turkmen delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed Gurbanov, while the Iraqi side was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Bahr Al-Ulum.
The consultations focused on the development of political, diplomatic, trade, economic, cultural, and humanitarian cooperation, as well as key issues on the bilateral agenda. Both sides underscored the importance of high-level contacts in advancing Turkmen-Iraqi relations and providing fresh impetus for multifaceted cooperation.
In this regard, the parties discussed preparations for the upcoming International Conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, scheduled to be held in Ashgabat this December.
The two delegations also addressed the strengthening of the legal framework governing bilateral relations and explored new opportunities for expansion. Particular attention was given to the establishment of parliamentary friendship groups and the enhancement of interparliamentary cooperation. Both sides expressed interest in maintaining active collaboration within international organizations, particularly the United Nations.
The discussions reaffirmed that Turkmenistan and Iraq share a relationship founded on the principles of mutual respect, trust, and equality, reflecting the spirit of traditional friendship and partnership between the two nations.
As part of the visit, Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed Gurbanov also met with the President of the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce, Abdul Razzaq Al-Zuhairi.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the current state and future prospects of trade and economic relations between Turkmenistan and Iraq. They emphasized the importance of strengthening contacts between the business communities of both countries and encouraged active participation in international economic forums, exhibitions, and business events held in Turkmenistan and Iraq.
Both sides expressed confidence that enhanced economic dialogue and private-sector cooperation would contribute to the long-term development of mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.
