UAE Joins UNESCO's ISSN Network

Paris, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates (UAE), represented by the National Library and Archives (NLA), has officially joined the prestigious International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) International Centre, headquartered in Paris under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Today, the NLA announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize its membership with the ISSN International Centre, in collaboration with the UAE National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The MoU was signed virtually by Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Director General of the NLA, and Dr. Gaelle Bequet, Director of the ISSN International Centre.

Mr. Al Ali expressed gratitude and eagerness for future collaborations, emphasizing the critical role of preserving knowledge. Dr. Bequet underscored that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to excellence, marking a significant milestone in their joint endeavors.

Highlighting the significance of standardization, Mr. Al Ali noted that adopting ISSNs for UAE periodicals will ensure the uniformity and recognition of intellectual outputs, facilitating access for researchers and the public, both domestically and internationally.

Dr. Bequet conveyed optimism about the future collaboration between the UAE and the ISSN International Centre, viewing the MoU as pivotal in strengthening bilateral relations and achieving mutual goals. She emphasized that the MoU initiates a period of concerted effort and collaboration among all stakeholders.

The ISSN International Centre plays a crucial role in maintaining the ISSN Portal, coordinating activities among ISSN National Centres worldwide, and assigning ISSNs to publications globally, including those from countries lacking a National Centre.
