UAE Pavilion at Expo 2023 Doha Clinches Gold for "Best Self-Built Pavilion

Doha, The Gulf Observer: In a remarkable achievement, the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2023 Doha has secured the prestigious gold award for the “Best Self-Built Pavilion,” marking the culmination of its six-month participation in the Expo program.

The recognition bestowed upon the UAE Pavilion underscores its alignment with Expo 2023 Doha’s themes, distinguished by innovative landscape design, meticulous plant species selection, utilization of sustainable materials, and captivating environmental and cultural programming. Additionally, the Pavilion’s guest experience, which authentically reflected the UAE’s culture and sustainable journey, was acknowledged.

Spanning an impressive 2,290 square meters and designed by the renowned Bjarke Ingles Group (BIG), the Pavilion’s architectural inspiration drew from the resilient Ghaf tree, the national tree of the UAE. From its intricate root structure to its expansive branches and leaves, the Pavilion embodied the essence of the Ghaf tree, incorporating locally sourced materials such as rammed earth walls and a roof crafted from palm leaves. Moreover, the Pavilion featured extensive landscaping, boasting a diverse array of native and adaptive plants endemic to the UAE, including edible plants, fruit trees, medicinal herbs, and more.

Expressing delight at the accolade, Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of State, lauded the strategic vision of the UAE’s leadership and the collaborative efforts of various entities involved in the Pavilion’s success. She emphasized the Pavilion’s role in showcasing the UAE’s rich agricultural heritage and fostering connections with Qatar and the global community.

In extending congratulations to Qatar for hosting a remarkable global gathering, Minister Al Kaabi acknowledged the contributions of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in convening a successful event aimed at shaping a sustainable future.

The UAE Pavilion’s guest experience, curated by Atelier Brückner (ATB), offered visitors six immersive interventions themed “Nurturing Legacy.” These interventions provided insights into the UAE’s agricultural legacy and highlighted the nation’s endeavors towards sustainability and resilience.

Ibrahim Salem Humaid Alalawi, Commissioner-General of the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2023 Doha, expressed jubilation at the Pavilion’s success and highlighted its role in showcasing the nation’s sustainability journey to the world. Over the course of the Expo, the Pavilion hosted diverse programs, including panel discussions, educational workshops, creative sessions, and live cooking demonstrations, all aimed at engaging visitors and fostering dialogue on sustainability.

The UAE Pavilion’s participation in Expo 2023 Doha marks its third presentation at an International Horticultural Exposition, exemplifying the nation’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices and fostering international cooperation. The Pavilion’s success underscores the UAE’s dedication to leading by example in sustainability and innovation on the global stage.
