UN Sustainable Development

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: Experts from the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies (IMRS) have meticulously analyzed Uzbekistan’s strides in achieving one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the period 2017-2022 – “Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

According to the UN SDG rating for 2023, Uzbekistan has secured a commendable 69th position among 166 countries, marking an improvement of 8 positions compared to the previous year. This accomplishment is attributed to advancements across various indicators related to the 10 Sustainable Development Goals.

The specific focus on the SDG “provide quality education for all” encompassed 9 tasks and 6 indicators. Noteworthy positive changes have been identified, reflecting the commitment and efforts invested in the educational sector. The Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) conducted within this framework revealed that 82.6 percent of children aged 3 to 5 years in Uzbekistan perceive their health, education, psychological, and social well-being positively. This figure aligns with the global average for UN member states.

Furthermore, substantial progress has been observed in children’s participation in preparation for primary education, with a remarkable 2-fold increase recorded from 2018 to 2022, reaching 84.2 percent in 2022. The breakdown includes 83.4 percent for girls and 85 percent for boys.

Over the same period, the proportion of young people and the elderly with proficiency in information-communication technologies witnessed a significant rise, reflecting Uzbekistan’s commitment to digital literacy across generations.

A notable achievement is the calculated parity index, a crucial metric assessing well-being within the education system. The index increased from 0.92 to 1.03 among households with the lowest income, demonstrating strides towards educational equity.

Equally vital, the proportion of schools equipped with the necessary conditions for an effective educational process saw a marked increase from 2018 to 2022.

The comprehensive progress in these education-related indicators underscores Uzbekistan’s dedication to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education system that aligns with global sustainability objectives.
