President of Uzbekistan proposes number of initiatives at SCO Summit in Samarkand
Samarkand, The Gulf Observer: President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev at an expanded meeting of the SCO summit on September 16 proposed a number of initiatives aimed at expanding various areas of cooperation between the member states.
Mirziyoyev suggested to form a common space for industrial and technological cooperation based on the launch of the New Economic Dialogue of the SCO, to hold a week of business partnership between the SCO regions in Uzbekistan, to create an Alliance of Special Economic Zones of the SCO countries, and to hold on the Uzbekistan-SCO industrial zone in Samarkand the first meeting of the administrations of the SCO special zones in 2023.
In addition, the President also proposed to hold annually a large trade fair and create a single electronic platform, to develop common principles and approaches to ensuring food security, and to hold the International Conference on Food Security in 2023.
It was also suggested to create an interregional center for interconnectedness in Tashkent with the support of the UN, to hold the first SCO Transport Forum in Uzbekistan in 2023, to create the SCO Climate Council, to increase the effectiveness of the SCO RATS by establishing the practice of annual field meetings of the SCO RATS Council, and to to create a platform for combating cyber crime.
Mirziyoyev also asked to consider establishing a special fund for the humanitarian support of Afghanistan in Termez, establishing additional formats within the framework of the SCO (Forum of University Rectors, Days of Culture, sports events), launching digital platforms for intercultural dialogue (virtual museums, scientific videoconferences), and declaring 2023 the Year of Tourism Development in the SCO space.
Samarkand, Uzbekistan, hosts a summit of the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) from September 15 to September 16. This event will be the first face-to-face meeting of SCO leaders since 2019 and the end of Uzbekistan’s chairmanship in the organization.
Leaders of 14 countries and heads of 10 international organizations take part in the summit.
