Vietnam Drafts New Law to Enhance UN Peacekeeping Capabilities

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is in the process of drafting a new law aimed at bolstering the capabilities of its United Nations (UN) peacekeeping force. The first meeting of the law’s drafting committee took place on Friday, chaired by Senior General Hoàng Xuân Chiến, Deputy Minister of Defence.

Senior General Chiến acknowledged Vietnam’s successes in its peacekeeping efforts but highlighted that existing regulations pose significant challenges. The current deployment process is encumbered by multiple levels of approval, complicating swift action during emergencies which is crucial for ensuring the safety of Vietnamese forces. Additionally, some regulations do not sufficiently prioritize and encourage female participation in UN peacekeeping missions, despite the UN’s policy advocating for a greater female presence.

The proposed law aims to address these issues by streamlining the approval process and establishing more supportive policies for Vietnamese peacekeepers, with an emphasis on increasing female participation in UN missions. This initiative reflects Vietnam’s commitment to aligning with UN standards and enhancing the effectiveness of its peacekeeping operations.

During the meeting, delegates discussed the draft law’s scope, applicability, and the procedures for its development. There was consensus that the law should encompass personnel from both the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Public Safety, as well as civilians. Adjustments to the drafting timeline were proposed to ensure comprehensive consultation and timely completion of the law.

Senior General Chiến underscored the significance of the new law, stating that participation in UN peacekeeping not only elevates Vietnam’s international standing but also contributes to national defence through peaceful means. He commended the committee for their diligent efforts and acknowledged the valuable input from various ministries and agencies.

The new law will align with Vietnam’s broader strategy for participating in UN peacekeeping operations, as approved by the Politburo and outlined in the plans of the Ministry of National Defence and Ministry of Public Security between 2014 and 2020. This legislative initiative is a testament to Việt Nam’s dedication to supporting global peace and security.
