Việtnam, Hungary reaffirm commitment to deepen traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: National Assembly (NA) Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn on Monday reaffirmed that Việt Nam always attaches great importance to and seeks to further strengthen its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Hungary — Việtnam’s first comprehensive partner in Central and Eastern Europe.
Chairman Mẫn made the remarks during official talks with Hungarian National Assembly Speaker László Kövér, who is leading a high-level Hungarian parliamentary delegation on an official visit to Việtnam from October 18–22 at the invitation of the Vietnamese NA Chairman. The talks followed an official welcome ceremony.
Chairman Mẫn underlined that Speaker Kövér’s visit carried great significance as it coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Việtnam and Hungary (1950–2025). He noted that the visit would contribute to consolidating the traditional friendship between the two nations and enhancing cooperation between their legislative bodies.
Highlighting the long-standing friendship and collaboration between the two countries, the Vietnamese top legislator recalled that Hungary was among the first ten nations to establish diplomatic ties with Việtnam. He expressed Việtnam’s deep gratitude for Hungary’s valuable support during the country’s struggles for national independence, reunification, and subsequent development.
For his part, Speaker Kövér emphasized that despite geographical distance and cultural differences, few countries have developed such close relations with Hungary as Việt Nam. He observed that both nations hold vast potential for cooperation in the fields of economics, trade, investment, tourism, and education.
The Hungarian Speaker affirmed that under Hungary’s “Eastern Opening” foreign policy, Việt Nam is regarded as its most important priority partner in Southeast Asia, and Hungary wishes to further deepen bilateral cooperation across all sectors. He also expressed confidence that the upcoming 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Việt Nam would achieve great success, ushering in a new era of growth and prosperity for the country.
During the talks, both leaders exchanged information on the situation in their respective countries and the operations of their parliaments. They commended the positive progress in bilateral relations in recent years, marked by frequent high-level visits and dynamic legislative cooperation.
The two sides agreed to further strengthen contacts and delegation exchanges at all levels through Party, State, Government, and parliamentary channels, as well as people-to-people exchanges, to foster political trust and mutual understanding. They also agreed to promote collaboration in science and technology, education and training, environment, healthcare, culture, and tourism.
Discussing parliamentary cooperation, Chairman Mẫn briefed Speaker Kövér on the main outcomes of the ongoing 10th session of the 15th National Assembly. Both sides agreed to enhance exchanges between NA leaders, specialised committees, and friendship parliamentary groups to share legislative experience and support the effective implementation of high-level agreements.
They also reached a consensus on the main theme of the sixth legislative seminar between the two parliaments, scheduled for the first half of 2026, and pledged to intensify coordination at regional and international inter-parliamentary forums in the interest of global peace, cooperation, and development.
Reaffirming their shared commitment to peace and stability in the region, both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea (South China Sea) and resolving disputes peacefully in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Chairman Mẫn also called on the Hungarian Parliament and relevant authorities to continue facilitating the integration and stable life of the Vietnamese community in Hungary.
Following the talks, Speaker Kövér and his delegation attended the 10th session of the 15th National Assembly as observers. Later, Chairman Mẫn hosted an official banquet in honour of the visiting Hungarian parliamentary delegation.
