Vietnam Stands Firmly in Support of Palestine’s UN Membership at UNGA
New York, The Gulf Observer: Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), on Monday reaffirmed Vietnam’s co-sponsorship and unwavering support for the historic resolution presented at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), advocating for the membership of the State of Palestine within the UN framework.
Addressing the UNGA’s emergency special session convened in New York to address the Middle East situation and the Palestine issue, Ambassador Giang reiterated Vietnam’s steadfast stance in solidarity with Palestine, emphasizing its inherent right to self-determination and endorsing its prompt admission as a full member of the UN.
Ambassador Giang articulated his belief that the admission of Palestine as a full member constitutes a pivotal step towards advancing the two-state solution, fostering an equitable platform for negotiations between all parties involved, and ultimately paving the way for sustainable peace in the Middle East.
He underscored that Vietnam’s unwavering support for Palestine stems from a shared history of struggles for sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence, and the fundamental rights and well-being of its people.
Expressing grave concerns over the escalating conflict in Gaza and its potential to escalate into a regional crisis, Ambassador Giang vehemently condemned all acts of violence targeting civilians and essential infrastructure, while firmly opposing any encroachments on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Ambassador Giang urged all parties involved to exercise utmost restraint, engage in dialogue, adhere to international law, and uphold the principles enshrined in the UN Charter and relevant resolutions. He called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages, and the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid.
Furthermore, Ambassador Giang reiterated Vietnam’s steadfast support for the two-state solution and reiterated its backing for the pivotal role of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in providing vital humanitarian assistance in the region.
The emergency special session of the UNGA was convened subsequent to the vetoing of a draft resolution on Palestine’s admission at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on April 18. During this session, the General Assembly adopted a resolution enhancing Palestine’s status at the UN to that of an observer State, effective as of September 10, 2024, and urged the UNSC to expedite deliberations on its full membership.
