Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: The Vietnamese military rescue and relief team that was deployed to Myanmar in the wake of the recent devastating earthquake returned home on the evening of April 8, concluding a highly commendable humanitarian mission.

Dispatched on March 30 by the Ministry of Defence, the 80-member delegation was equipped with critical search-and-rescue tools, medical supplies, relief goods, six service dogs, and several tonnes of specialized equipment. Their mission aimed to support Myanmar’s recovery efforts following the natural disaster that caused widespread destruction and loss of life.

In Naypyidaw, the Vietnamese team conducted intensive operations at three severely impacted sites: the Bala Tidi apartment complex, Ottara Thiri hospital, and the Aye Chan Thar hotel. Their efforts led to the recovery of 21 victims’ bodies and, notably, the rescue of a 26-year-old man, in collaboration with rescue teams from Myanmar and Turkey. The Vietnamese forces also located and returned valuable equipment and goods to Ottara Thiri hospital and local communities.

In addition to search-and-rescue operations, the team provided free medical consultations and treatment to over 200 residents, addressing the urgent healthcare gap caused by the destruction of local hospitals. Demonstrating further solidarity, they donated US$5,000 to the families of victims and delivered 40 tonnes of dried food and tents to support affected communities.

The mission highlighted Vietnam’s growing role in international humanitarian operations, showcasing the country’s commitment to defence diplomacy, international cooperation, and global solidarity.

Major General Myat Thu, head of Myanmar’s Fire Services Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs, praised the Vietnamese delegation’s bravery, dedication, and professionalism, emphasizing their role in saving lives and offering hope amid tragedy.

The successful mission not only reflects the capability and compassion of the Vietnamese armed forces but also strengthens Vietnam’s image as a responsible and active contributor to regional peace and humanitarian assistance.
