Volcano Erupts in Iceland, Marking Fourth Occurrence Since December

Copenhagen, The Gulf Observer: On Saturday, Iceland experienced the eruption of a volcano for the fourth time since December, as confirmed by the country’s meteorological office. The spectacle unfolded with billowing smoke and vivid orange lava illuminating the night sky in sharp contrast.

According to Reuters, footage captured from a Coast Guard helicopter, broadcasted on public broadcaster RUV, depicted fountains of molten rock soaring from an extensive fissure in the ground, with lava swiftly spreading in both directions.

The eruption commenced at 2023 GMT, with the fissure estimated to span approximately 2.9 kilometers in length, mirroring the scale of the previous eruption in February, as stated by the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Authorities had issued warnings for weeks regarding the imminent eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula, situated just south of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik.

The eruption site, located between Hagafell and Stora-Skogfell, coincides with the area of the previous outbreak on February 8, according to the Met Office.

Rikke Pedersen, head of the Nordic Volcanological Centre, commented, “This was definitely expected,” highlighting the unpredictable nature of the eruption’s timing, with significant seismic activity detected only minutes before.

Despite the eruption, Reykjavik’s Keflavik Airport remained operational for both departures and arrivals.

Lava flow was observed moving rapidly south towards the nearby Grindavik fishing town, prompting the evacuation of residents. The town had previously suffered destruction during a January outbreak, where several homes were engulfed in flames.

In response to the escalating situation, Icelandic police declared a state of emergency for the affected area.

The renowned Blue Lagoon luxury geothermal spa promptly closed its doors in response to the eruption, a precautionary measure taken during previous volcanic events.

As Iceland grapples with the unfolding volcanic activity, authorities remain vigilant, closely monitoring developments and ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities amidst the ongoing eruption.
