Wang Yi Calls on UN Security Council to Mediate Ukraine Crisis

New York, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged the United Nations Security Council to step up efforts to mediate the ongoing Ukraine crisis, advocating for the resolution of differences, finding common ground, and building lasting peace. Wang made these remarks during a high-level meeting on Ukraine at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, as the conflict enters its third year.

In his address, Wang highlighted the escalating violence, rising civilian casualties, and intensifying spillover effects of the conflict, warning that the prospect of peace remains distant. “Each additional day of the crisis brings more suffering to the people, more destruction to the region, and more instability to the world,” he said, emphasizing that this situation is unsustainable and must be urgently reversed.

Wang called for all parties to prioritize peace, the well-being of the people, and to commit genuinely to negotiations and dialogue. He stressed the urgent need to reduce tensions and raised three key principles: preventing the conflict from expanding beyond the battlefield, avoiding further escalation, and refraining from actions that fuel the conflict.

The Chinese Foreign Minister also underscored the international community’s responsibility to foster peace and manage the broader consequences of the crisis. He noted growing calls for peace and negotiations, particularly from countries in the Global South, which have been uniting to create an atmosphere conducive to peace and to accumulate the necessary conditions for it.

Wang Yi also criticized the imposition of unilateral sanctions and the creation of exclusive blocs, urging all parties to avoid using the crisis as an excuse to disrupt global economic and trade relations. He called for strengthened international cooperation in key sectors such as energy, finance, trade, food security, and the protection of critical infrastructure like oil and gas pipelines.

As the Ukraine crisis continues, China has reiterated its stance on the importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and peaceful resolution, reaffirming its call for the international community to work together towards a peaceful outcome.
