67th Smetana’s Litomyšl Festival Opens with Czech Philharmonic, Showcases New Stage and Focus on Dance

Litomyšl, The Gulf Observer: The 67th edition of Smetana’s Litomyšl, the Czech Republic’s oldest music festival, opened on Saturday evening with a stirring performance by the Czech Philharmonic under the baton of conductor Jakub Hrůša, featuring acclaimed Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang as soloist.
Marking a return to tradition, the festival’s opening concert was once again held in the courtyard of the UNESCO-listed Litomyšl Castle after a two-year hiatus. Audiences were welcomed by a brand-new covered stage, designed to enhance acoustics and weather protection while preserving the historic ambiance of the venue.
This year’s program features a special emphasis on dance and ballet, showcasing the festival’s evolving artistic range. Running through July 6, the 2025 edition includes nearly 50 performances, among them four operas, spanning classical and contemporary works.
Beyond the castle courtyard, concerts and cultural events will be hosted at Smetana House, two local churches, and the picturesque Nové Hrady Castle, reinforcing the festival’s deep connection to both music and heritage.
Named after composer Bedřich Smetana, who was born in Litomyšl, the annual festival remains a cornerstone of Czech cultural life, drawing international talent and audiences to the Eastern Bohemian town each summer.
