8th Historic Dalma Race Festival Opens, Celebrating UAE’s Maritime Heritage and Cultural Identity

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: The 8th edition of the Historic Dalma Race Festival officially commenced today on Dalma Island in the Al Dhafra Region of Abu Dhabi, marking the start of a three-week celebration of Emirati maritime traditions, cultural heritage, and community spirit. The festival will run until 1 June 2025.
Organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the festival is designed to revive traditional seafaring customs, promote national identity, and position Dalma Island as a key destination for cultural tourism and sporting excellence.
A Cultural and Economic Celebration
Each weekend — Friday through Sunday — will see a vibrant schedule of heritage-themed activities tailored to attract families, residents, and tourists. These include:
- A traditional heritage market, featuring Emirati crafts, local delicacies, and live artisan demonstrations.
- Theatrical performances, children’s entertainment zones, and daily competitions, creating an inclusive and festive atmosphere.
- Showcases of handcraft traditions that reflect the deep cultural roots of the UAE.
The event also serves as a platform to support local artisans and productive families, contribute to the island’s economic development, and provide interactive educational experiences that bridge the past and present.
Preserving and Promoting Maritime Traditions
At the heart of the festival lies its commitment to reviving the UAE’s historic maritime legacy, particularly the importance of Dalma Island as a key site in the nation’s pearling and trading history. By celebrating the traditional dhow races and hosting cultural exhibitions, the festival aims to pass on enduring values to younger generations, deepen awareness of the UAE’s island heritage, and strengthen the collective Emirati identity.
With an increasing focus on sustainable tourism, the Historic Dalma Race Festival continues to grow in stature as one of Abu Dhabi’s premier cultural and sporting events, drawing both local and international attention to the treasures of the Al Dhafra Region.
